The Market is one of the world’s best sources for retailers and online markets to purchase high demand products at attractive prices. Serving tens of thousands of businesses every month, the Market has become one of the world’s leading centers for sourcing products that are in demand by consumers. Founded in 1982, today the Yiwu Wholesale Market is composed of two market groups, the Yiwu International Trade Market and the Huangyuan Market(Clothing). Large in scope, the Market has around 70,000 shops covering four million square meters. Selling over 1.7 million different types of products at wholesale prices in over 4,200 categories covering sixteen industries, these shops export to over 215 countries around the world. An honored and well respected Chinese company, the Yiwu Wholesale Market has received many awards over the past decade including the following:
  1. 2002 Value Quality, Honor Credibility Award from the General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine of the People’s Republic of China
  2. Five-Star Civilized & Normative Market Award by the Zhejiang Industrial & Commercial Administration
  3. 2006 Contract Abiding, Trustworthy Enterprise Award by the State Administration For Industrial & Commerce
  4. 2006 Model Market For Credibility of Zhejiang Province Award by the Zhejiang Industrial & Commercial Administration
The Yiwu Wholesale Market offers a wide variety of product categories including housewares, decorations and crafts, jewelry, toys, floral, cosmetics, hardware, textiles, electronics and electric products, clothing and accessories, leather goods, shoes, sporting goods, linens, auto accessories, and much more. The shops open every day of the year except for the days celebrating Chinese New Year most sellers accept small quantity orders which is good for those just start their business. All prices in the shops are wholesale prices and most of the products are in stock at the factory and will ship within two weeks. Pricing and availability depend on quantities, special order considerations, and product quality. Large in scope, many people wonder just how large the Yiwu Wholesale Market is. Difficult to imagine and impressive when you see it, the Market covers four million square meters, featuring many large complexes, buildings and halls. Just walking from one end of a building to the other takes one hour. With twelve corridors in each five-story building, simply walking past all of the shops in one building takes almost eight hours. Walking all of the buildings in the Market, with no stopping to shop, would take more than ten days. Visitors to the market either need to be highly selective and determined to visit only the most important shops to them and their business, or plan to spend several weeks exploring the market and discovering the most interesting shops. Any and all products purchased at the Market can be easily shipped from China to destinations around the world via containers and the shipping facilities located in regional port cities. Purchases from any number of vendors can be consolidated into the same containers, and products for different customers in the same general location can be combined into single containers for more efficient shipping. The buying agents in Yiwu coordinate with wholesalers and shipping companies to ensure that the freight is received, consolidated and shipped on schedule.

Key Facts of Yiwu Wholesale Market

The Yiwu Wholesale Market is an amazing source of popular, highly functional, and unique products that retailers around the world desire for their stores or ecommerce websites. Before placing an order at the Market, there are a number of things to be aware of and prepared for. Following are some of the key facts and tips for being a successful buyer at the Yiwu Wholesale Market. Scope And Size
  1. The Yiwu Wholesale Market is gigantic. Whether shopping in person or online at the market, have a strategy or specific type of products in mind. Unless you enjoy simply shopping around randomly and becoming easily overwhelmed, have a game plan and stick to it.
  2. Unlike Guangzhou and Shenzhen, Yiwu does not have a port in the city, relying primarily instead on the port of Ningbo some 200km away for shipping products around the world. With their local port Guangzhou and Shenzhen may offer simpler shipping logistics, the variety of products offered in those markets tend to be more focused on certain categories. At the Yiwu Wholesale Market a wider variety of products can be found.
  3. The Yiwu Wholesale Market has a large variety of products across a wide range of categories. Most are small products, products that are used daily, or holiday and gift related products. There are few large sized products or industrial products available.
  4. The Market caters to both large volume purchasers and small quantity buyers equally. In general, the tens of thousands of shops are friendly and welcoming to all buyers regardless of volume. For a large volume buyer, placing high quantity orders and arranging shipping is fast and easy. For small quantity buyers, the Market can be a one stop solution for a wide variety of products that are on the shelf and available for immediate shipment. Yiwu is an excellent option for brick and mortar stores or online ecommerce sites that are in need of filler products to keep the shelves filled and customers coming back to see what’s new.
  5. There are no name brands at the Market because name brands do not operate at these small margins. However, there are many products that look similar in design and appearance to name brand products. These are not fakes, but a copy of a popular name brand product. If you are concerned about selling “fake” products, then it would be best to stay away from products that look highly similar to name brand products.
  6. The products offered in the Market vary in terms of quality. Product quality is closely related to product price. Buyers need to keep this in mind when they negotiate purchasing contracts and orders. Many sellers will offer you a very low price, but just be careful of what you will get, even you see the samples in the shop when you make the order, you still need to check very carefully when the goods arrived, some sellers will just hidden some bad quality ones between the good ones and this is what they say” you got what you paid for”.
About The Suppliers
  1. Most suppliers are owned by individual businesses, some are owned by trading companies or factories themselves. It is very difficult to discern which vendors are which, some factories may not only selling their own products, but also they will display some other suppliers’ samples on their shop, and for some traders, they can take you to the “factory” that doesn’t belong to them if you require visiting the factory.
  2. Wholesalers at the Market work with both large volume purchasers and small volume customers. Obviously, the large quantity one buys, the better the price, but small lots can be purchased as well. Many shops have spot goods that can be purchased in small quantities in the shop. These spot goods are typically sold as is.
Visiting The Market
  1. In general, no one needs to visit Yiwu in order to establish good relationships and begin purchasing products. In today’s highly connected world, anyone can easily search for products, place orders, make shipment arrangements, and build strong relationships online.
  2. If you decide to make a visit to the Market, then there are several things to do in preparation for the visit. Most nationalities require a visa for a visit to mainland China. It easy to obtain the visa, especially for business purposes, but plan ahead and contact the local Chinese embassy or consulate weeks or months in advance of the trip to ensure enough time for processing the visa application.
  3. Travelling to Yiwu is not a direct trip as there are no international flights to Yiwu. The easiest way to get to the Market is to fly to Shanghai and then take the high-speed train to Yiwu, which takes approximately 2.5 hours. Or flight to Hangzhou which is only half hour by train. There are many hotels in the area for overnight or extended stays, ranging from budget motels to five-star luxury hotels. When in Yiwu, traveling the city and surrounding area is fairly easy by taxi, but the taxi drivers only understand Chinese. If you have hired a Yiwu agent, then the agent commonly provides transportation for you around the city during your stay. Which leads to the next topic …
Working With An Agent
  1. Do I need to hire an agent? A Yiwu Market agent acts as your personal purchasing manager in the Market, accompanying you during your visits to suppliers, negotiating prices, settling payments and arranging for shipment, and coordinating all aspects of the procurement process. Many buyers find this level of local, experienced support highly valuable in making the entire process more efficient and straightforward. Others who have expertise in product procurement and purchasing may not have a need for a local agent. Some may use an agent at first and then once they become familiar with the suppliers and processes take over these responsibilities. Good agents know what suppliers are better for certain products, know the advantages of different suppliers, and know which products are of the best quality. Agents work on a commission rate which gets smaller as the volume increases but is typically in the range of three to ten percent. Beware of agents offering a one percent commission. If you are considering using an agent, contact several to discuss your needs and their fees, ask for references, research the agents, and then select the best one for you and your business.
  2. If you are using an agent, the responsibility of the agent for having products from multiple vendors loaded into a single container is straight forward:
    1. Place orders in the Market together if you are visiting or have the agent place the orders on your behalf. You should review the orders for accuracy and completeness before paying in full.
    2. Book the cargo space
    3. Instruct the supplier to deliver the goods to the agent’s warehouse for inspection and consolidation
    4. Prepare and submit the customs declarations forms and paperwork
    5. Oversee the loading of the container
    6. Create all shipping and export forms and paperwork
    7. Release the bill of lading to you for importing
  3. If you are using an agent, coordinating the shipment of your purchases is their responsibility. Simply provide them with the shipment information and then follow up to make sure things have been set up and are proceeding properly. If you are not using an agent, then you will need to select and work with a freight forwarder directly. Select a freight forwarder and provide the freight forwarder with all of the shipment information that they require. Goods from multiple vendors can be shipped in one container. Again, an agent can coordinate this for you or you can provide instructions to each vendor to coordinate with your freight forwarder according to the FOB terms from each supplier, which is typically FOB Yiwu.
Purchasing At The Market
  1. Most of the wholesalers at the Market are not the manufacturers of the products they sell, but rather a trading company with relationships with factories in China and elsewhere that produce the products. To keep their costs low, they may not keep a large inventory on hand and may have to place an order with the manufacturer to obtain the products you desire.
  2. Most shop owners and employees at the Market speak only Chinese and possibly a small amount of Basic English. An agent can serve as your translator, making working with vendors easier and more efficient. If you do not have an agent, hiring a translator for the day is an excellent approach to make sure that negotiations go well and that are no misunderstandings about the products, quantities, and product quality that you are purchasing. There are many translation companies in the area, so finding and hiring a translator is fairly easy.
  3. Most suppliers offer private labeling options for an additional cost. It is very common for private labeling, especially for online stores. The easiest option is to have the supplier make the private labeled package, although carefully check for the quality and accuracy of the labeling. Another option is to ask an agent to take responsibility for the private labeling and work with supplier on your behalf. The more difficult option is to identify and work with a packaging company, some of which are located within the Market. This company will work with you to create the private labels and then work with the supplier to implement the packaging. This option requires extra work, but often produces the best and more reliable results.
  4. The most efficient and effective way to finance purchases and conduct business at the Market is to wire payments directly to the supplier’s bank account. Another other common method is to pay cash in local currency. If you are working with an agent, then the payments are to the agent, who will in turn pay the vendors. In general credit cards are not accepted, traveler’s checks are not recommended, debit cards are burdened with expensive fees, and bank transfers must be done in advance. Visa and Mastercard credit or debit cards can be easily used to withdraw cash out of ATMs or from banks in preparation for any purchase. If you are buying in person in the market, a good rule of thumb is to not pay in full until you inspect the finished products and approve them.
  5. It is your responsibility as a buyer to be fully aware of all safety standards and regulations in the county of your business. The Yiwu suppliers cannot be expected to be aware of and compliant with other countries’ rules, customs laws, and other regulations regarding the products. Do not expect the supplier to advise you about any possible regulatory issues. You need to do your research before purchasing any products. Unless you are extremely familiar with the following products, their rules and regulations, and importing issues, customers from the USA, Europe , Australia and New Zealand should be more careful when you decide to purchase the following categories:
  6. Cosmetics, (most suppliers are unable to offer the safety test report)
  7. Electronics,( very few suppliers have CE, RoHS, UL certificate )
  8. Children’s products (Toys) ( especially for the US new Standard ASTMF963-17)
  9. Medical devices (it requires FDA, CE, etc.)
  10. If you get into a dispute with a wholesaler and have paid in full, it may be difficult to get your money back if there are product quality issues or delivery issues. Always ensure product quality before making the final payment. If you have hired an agent, ask the agent to meet with the supplier to discuss the issue and negotiate compensation or replacement products.

The agent can help narrow down the vast array of products to only those that fit the profile and focus of the business and recommend the best vendors to consider for product purchases. Working with an agent, business can be done remotely as the agent is your representative in Yiwu. For large companies, it may be more advantageous to begin with a trip to the Yiwu Wholesale Market and explore the possibilities in person. Christmas items made in China take up a large market share around the world, making China an increasingly important role in the global Christmas market, International Financial News reported on Dec. 25. The Christmas tree, one of the most popular goods for the Christmas holiday, showed two trends in Western countries this year. First is the popularity of the “Upside Down Christmas Tree,” which costs hundreds of dollars online and nearly $1,000 in stores. Second is the shortage of planted Christmas trees. Against such a backdrop, Western countries turned to artificial trees made in China. Data shows that Christmas trees made in China account for two thirds of the trees in the North American market, which takes up 51.3 percent of global consumption of the trees. Christmas products in Yiwu, the largest small commodity wholesale market in China, hold about 60-70 percent of the global sales share, according to Cai Qinliang, secretary-general of the Yiwu Christmas Products Industry Association. Cai added that from September 2016 to August 2017, Yiwu produced $3 billion worth of Christmas items. With the development of cross-border e-commerce, China’s Christmas trade has gradually moved online. And thanks to the Belt and Road Initiative and the freight trains connecting Yiwu and Europe, China has expanded its European market.

Yiwu city is famous worldwide because of the well developed small commodities international trade. Formally, it is some small town, under the administration of Jinhua city area in Zhejiang province, which central city is Hangzhou. However, Yiwu is probably well-known more than Jinhua and Hangzhou both in China and worldwide.

Yiwu city today

International Trade City – Futian Market – is the only reason for growing Yiwu city. All city is related to the Yiwu Market; it attracts many buyers from all around the world, more than 50 000 customers visit Yiwu Market every day. Today Yiwu Market – enormous complex of buildings, more than 3 000 000 sq.m., around 105 000 showrooms of the factories and trading companies from different regions of China. Yiwu Market is the most successful wholesale market in China. This project was created with the target of giving opportunities to a big number of suppliers in China to show their goods and abilities, demonstrate their samples “live” to buyers from different countries. A lot of cities and regions in China were trying to do the same projects, but only Yiwu made those ideas real. Today, Yiwu Market is one of the best places in China for buyers who want to find suppliers, do business with export from China. The main competitor of Yiwu is Guangzhou and its Canton Fair. However, Yiwu – never stopping Canton Fair, prices lower, the minimum order also. One of the reasons of Yiwu success – smart economic and administrative policy in the region. In Yiwu, there are special terms for local and foreign companies.
Office buildings near Yiwu Market
Second reason – Yiwu Market themselves. Perfectly organized space, convenient place, huge sizes – more than 105 000 showrooms and 3 000 000 sq.m. Infrastructure is also well prepared – more than 100 hotels, many office buildings, warehouses, transport system – there are no difficulties in reach Yiwu and stay here for a week or even a few years. Foreigners can live and do business in Yiwu with more freedom, comparing to other regions in China. You can open your office, or branch of your company – using easy procedures. This kind of economic freedom brings a result – now there is many buying offices, export businesses in Yiwu. This factor is only increasing the number of deals in Yiwu. Today, Yiwu city is continuing to grow – new districts of the Yiwu Market, business, and financial area, warehouses, factories, offices of the suppliers and buyers.
Yiwu Business and financial area, view from the Yiwu International Sculpture Park
Delegations from other Chinese regions officials – frequent guests in Yiwu this time. They are trying to learn from Yiwu about how to make the economy grow. A lot of conferences, regional and state level meetings here. Many foreigners live in Yiwu constantly, mostly from India and the Middle East – they are biggest buyers here. Essentially, these foreigners working as an export agent, trading companies, buyers offices of the foreign companies. Today, while the population of the foreigners is growing, many of them not only doing export and trading business. Many people started the business in service area – you can find many European, Muslim, Arabian restaurants, cafes, hotels, barbershops and so on. As well as Christian and Muslim temples.
View from the gates of Yiwu Market District 2, “Best Western” hotel
Yiwu is continuing to grow – new roads, bridges, private apartments blocks, shopping malls. However, the growth of the population – under the question now. A big part of the Yiwu population – “working migrants” from other cities, the native population is only about 600 – 700 000 people. In 2015 trading activity in China (and Yiwu) fallen down. Also, now, nobody can know exactly, will Yiwu grow as fast as before, or not. All depends on world trading activity. There are more than 100 hotels in Yiwu; you can find a very cheap hotel and at the same time – Yiwu Marriott Hotel with premium services. Most of the hotels are located near the Yiwu Market. Yiwu Airport can accept flights only from mainland China and Hong Kong; it is not an international. You can take the flight to Yiwu from Beijing, Guangzhou and other cities.
From the roof of Yiwu Market
There is a high-speed train station in Yiwu, part of the Chinese high-speed train network. You can quickly come to Yiwu from Shanghai, Beijing, Hangzhou and other cities, using the high-speed train. The train station in Yiwu is expanding now, because of increasing number of passengers. Yiwu Port – another unique place. A Huge complex of buildings, the biggest inland port in China and the whole world. Warehouses, commercial offices, government structures offices, customs – all in one place. In the Yiwu Port, you load the container and pass all the customs procedures in China. So container is ready for the further shipping – by sea or by train. That is very convenient.
Yiwu Market District 2, at night
Yiwu is the start point of the “new silk road.” From Yiwu, you can send container by train to Russia, Europe, and the Middle East. Not using sea freight. So time of shipping is shorter. In the future, that shall be a real alternative to sea freight. Cheaper and faster – good choice. Let’s see what Yiwu will bring to us in the future! ]]>

Although China doesn’t have laws recognizing refugees, it grants visas to people from war-torn countries.Ammar Albaadani, a 38-year-old Yemeni national, is now doing business in the small city. He said Yiwu was a very embracing city. “We Arabs were the first who came to Yiwu to do business and participated in the city’s economic development. Now many of us – Yemenis, Syrians, and Iraqis – have wars in our countries. We need to give all of them some warmth.” Since 2015, China’s strict immigration laws have been relaxed, starting in the country’s commercial center, Shanghai, to attract more highly-skilled workers. The policy has helped attract more talent from overseas as well as boost international exchanges and the economy, according to a statement from the Ministry of Public Security. One year after new measures were implemented, Shanghai saw a six-time year-on-year increase in the number of permanent residence applications from foreigners and their families. The number of such applications in Beijing last year increased 426 percent from that of 2015. Last year, 900,000 foreigners were legally employed to work in the Chinese mainland. This month, China announced plans to streamline its system of work permits to foreign nationals, aiming to attract skilled foreigners to contribute to the country’s development.

From Middle Eastern businessmen buying wholesale goods, to local shoppers picking up clothing, the large shopping city really has it all. The UN, World Bank and Morgan Stanley have called the shopping center, “the world’s largest small commodity wholesale market,” for a reason! Founded in 1982, the shopping plaza spans over 4 million square meters and employs 200,000 workers. Over 210,000 shoppers browse the merchandise every day. When traveling to or living in Yiwu, the shopping area is worth checking out, despite its overwhelming size. Commodity City is divided into districts: International Trade Mall Districts 1-5 and Huangyuan Clothing Market, together making up the shopping giant. Our advice: this is not a place to shop aimlessly, know what you want and pretend to be a wholesaler. 1) International Trade Mall District 1
District 1 of the International Trade Mall has four floors and a vast array of merchandise. The first floor is home to fake flowers, flower accessories and a wide range of toys. The second floor stocks accessories and jewelry and the third floor houses decorative items including festive decorations, crafts, porcelain, crystal, picture frames and more jewelry. The fourth floor is an outlet center selling high quality ceramics, crystal and glass.
2) International Trade Mall District 2
This district has five stories. Floor 1 contains bags, umbrellas and ponchos. Handymen (and women) should check out the second floor which sells hardware, tools, electronics, locks and car parts. The third floor holds kitchen equipment and small appliances as well as telephone and cell phone related items, and watches. The fourth and fifth floors contain manufacturer outlet centers, specialty boutiques and foreign trade procurement centers.
3) International Trade Mall District 3
With five functioning floors, District 3 sells everything from pens to make-up. The first floor sells pen and ink supplies, glasses, and paper goods. Floor number two contains office and school supplies as well as a sports and leisure section. The third floor sells cosmetics, zippers, buttons and other garment-related accessories. Floor four is the corporate sales center and the fifth holds imported goods from 28 countries including Italy, Japan, Brazil, Africa, Spain and Malaysia.
4) International Trade Mall District 4
Another five story shopping center but specializing in accessories. The first story sells hosiery. Yes, that means there is an entire floor of panty hose. The second floor sells gloves, hats and cotton fabric. Floor three sells shoes, ties, towels and wool fabric and the fourth floor houses bras, underwear, belts and scarves. A variety of vehicles can reach all the floors of the market because of the special elevated lanes, so drive right up to the floor of your choice!
5) International Trade Mall District 5
A bit to the west, District 5’s five floors stock everything from alcohol to hats to knitting needles. The first floor carries jewelry, crafts, food (and alcohol), first-aid and healthcare products, general merchandise, clothing, shoes, hats and important products from Africa. The second floor sells bedding and the third floor houses textiles and knitting materials (yarn). The fourth floor contains car accessories and the fifth floor is a trade service zone.
6) Huangyuan Clothing Market
Opened in April 2011, the Huangyuan Clothing Market (篁园服装市场) has eight whole floors of, you guessed it, clothing. The first floor sells business wear and jeans, the second floor carries men’s clothing and the third floor is all for the ladies. The fourth floor contains sportswear, the fifth floor houses children’s clothing and the sixth floor is a parking lot and food area. Floors seven and eight contain a showcase of local specialty products.
If you are planning to pay Commodity City a visit, note that its main purpose is to function as a wholesale market for businessmen. Because of this, many sellers will not take the time for non-bulk customers, however if you look around and buy a few of each item (get one for the whole family!) you can take advantage of the great deals. If one person won’t sell to you, chances are another salesperson will. Skip the over-priced tourist shopping area and pretend to be a wholesaler for the best deals! Add: Chengbei Lu (District 1), near Shangcheng Dadao (District 2), near Chouzhou Bei Lu and Yinhai Lu (District 3), near Chengxin Dadao (Districts 4, 5), (Note: The different districts are not far from each other), Yiwu ]]>

The Yiwu market developed and managed by Zhejiang China Commodities City Group Co., Ltd. (Public, SHA:600415).[5] Yiwu’s China Small-Commodity Market has for 6 consecutive years topped China’s 100 top open markets and was for successive years listed as “China’s civilized open market”. It has been named as the banner of China’s market economy and with a large variety of quality but cheaper commodities. There have been a significant increase in Arab traders since the September 11 attacks, as Middle Eastern businessmen found it difficult to travel to the United States due to visa restrictions. The Arab presence has fostered the rise of many mosques and Middle Eastern restaurants. The GDP reached 52 billion yuan in 2009, an increase of 9% from 2008, and the per capita GDP reached 71,457 yuan (US$10,461). The per capita urban disposable income reached 30,841 yuan and rural pure income 12,899 yuan, increasing 7.4% and 8.5% respectively. Its 4C-grade airport has over a dozen of air routes to cities including Beijing, Guangzhou, Shantou, Weifang and Shenzhen. The Zhejiang-Jiangxi Railway and Hangzhou-Jinhua Expressway passes through the city, making Yiwu an important local transportation hub. By train it is less than 3 hours from Shanghai. “Yiwu, 300 kilometres away from Shanghai, is the largest market of petty commodity wholesales in the world where various foreign buyers go to place orders”, according to ‘Chinese Figures Astonishing the World’, joint report from the United Nations, the World Bank and Morgan Stanley. The city was ranked first among county-level cities In “the 2004 Most Favourite Chinese Cities of Domestic and Foreign Public in 2004”. China Commodity City (CCC), the large wholesale market of Yiwu, was honored by the UN, the World Bank and Morgan Stanley amongst other world authorities in 2005 as the “largest small commodity wholesale market in the world”. The counterfeiting industry has been a problem in Yiwu due to the thriving market. As noted by Eamonn Fingleton, the author of In the Jaws of the Dragon: America’s Fate in the Coming Era of Chinese Dominance in 2008, “As documented by the author Tim Phillips in 2005… [t]he city of Yiwu … functions as a sort of ‘Wall Street’ for the counterfeiting industry, providing a vast marketplace where, Phillips states, 100,000 counterfeit products are openly traded and 2,000 metric tons of fakes change hands daily.”[6] According to Xinhua, more than 60% of Christmas trinkets worldwide in 2013 came from Yiwu.[7][8] ]]>
